Put that comb down and try these tricks, instead.
Comb-overs are nothing new. This particular styling tool is frequently found in older men whose hair has almost completely disappeared on top, but persists around the base of the skull. Although comb-overs are a good idea in theory, the actual appearance is usually obvious and almost always ineffective. Instead of this dreaded ‘do, try a few different ways of managing hair loss.
#1. Shaving It All Off
If thinning hair has you down, jump ahead of the curve by shaving it all off. Although it may seem counterintuitive, many men who have experienced prematurely thinning hair find freedom in removing hair altogether and embracing the look of a closely shaved scalp.
Whether you do a razor shave or cut your hair as close to your scalp as possible, going intentionally bald is a popular option, and is frequently seen in men of all ages and backgrounds.
#2. Wearing a Toupee
Hairpieces are often mocked in popular culture, but a well-worn, well-matched toupee has the potential to raise your confidence without engaging a comb-over. The trick to finding a good toupee is first to find a good quality. Opt for real hair over synthetic fibers, and if the color doesn’t quite match your own, dye it to more closely resemble your natural color. Toupees can also be cut to fit the way you style your hair and create a more seamless illusion.
#3. Clever Styling
Instead of growing a few long hairs and combing them over a large, glaring bald spot, enlist the help of a stylist. Stylists can apply thickening products and styling tools to essentially puff up individual strands and create a thicker, more robust appearance. This option could get expensive, if you take weekly or biweekly trips to the barber or stylist, but is a great option for men who are not quite ready to ditch their hair or try out a hairpiece.
#4. Embracing The Shine
Finally, consider embracing your body’s unique balding pattern, and loving what you have left. Much of the difference in men with thick hair and men with thinning hair lies in their confidence level, rather than tangible differences in appearance. If you have thinning hair, or are balding quickly, try to take pride in your body, its natural processes, and your hair. After all, thinning hair is not a defect; it is a mark of your body’s ability to create hormones and communicate those hormones to the rest of your body.
A long-held staple of thinning hair, the comb-over is not the best option for men hoping to hide the appearance of balding. Instead, opt for more natural-looking styles and tools.
